Plague Doctor

I think it's near enough to Halloween that it's acceptable to post more Halloween-y art.

My kid loves the play/gym thingy we go twice a week but I have to be there with him. It amazes me how other kids are just dropped off and they're totally fine with it.

Last week my kid witnessed a dad dropping off his little boy at the junior firefighter training and my kid was baffled. He was like, where's the dad going, he just left him here.

Oh well, now I'm complaining the kid doesn't want to do anything without me. In a couple of years I'll be complaining that the kid doesn't want to do anything with me.

Dogs in fedoras

If cats can wear fedoras, why not dogs as well. :)

As I told you previously, I'm not fond of the Grimm's fairy tales as they don't make much sense to me and they are well . . . a bit grim. I still read them to my kid, if he asks for them since I already introduced them to him. But we went to library for the first time together on Monday and I borrowed some children's books that came recommended to me.

Everyone raved about Room on the Broom, so I read it to my kid. It's translated to Slovene so I don't really know what words are used in original book but I was surprised people recommended this book as one of their kid's faves.

The words used for the witch are derogatory words we use for females. And since the kid is in that age range where he picks up words he's not supposed to and is even more into saying them, if you pay any kid of attention to them, I'm pretty sure he's going to, at some point, use these derogatory words to describe a female. I know it gives you an opportunity to teach him about use of such words but it baffles me that a parent would intentionally expose their child to them in such an innocent, fun way as this children's book does.

Because the derogatory words are not used in a way to teach a child a lesson, it would seem that we're giving kids permission to use them. It seems a bit hypocritical to me to scold a child for using these kind of words, if I was the one reading them to him before sleep.

I found the original on YouTube and it's nothing like the translated one I read. It's quite lovely, actually. The one translated to Slovene shocked me that parents were so excited about this book. Of course, the kids are going to love it when you read it to them in an animated voice and it rhymes. If you read them newspaper in such a way, they're going to love it, too. If it's appropriate, is another question.

Happy Friday the 13th, everyone! :)

Cats with fedoras

Randomness:
  • I went shopping for wardrobe in Italy on Wednesday. Maybe I bought too much? But I need new "work" clothes since I started applying for jobs and going on job interviews.
  • I don't like this season's fashion though with all the fur collars and fur coats and fur shoes etc.
  • the kid had his first kid's group exercise thing that I don't know how to translate to English. He was more interested than I thought he'd be.
  • we're shopping for a new dinning table and chairs. It's proven to be difficult with the kid tagging along since he gets cranky easily with such boring stuff.
  • the neighbor's kid is playing a soccer game on Saturday and we're taking the kid to watch.
What are you doing this weekend? Anything interesting?

An array of miscellaneous ATCs

These are artist-trading-cards (ATCs) I made for several people who set their own theme for their card. It's fun, it puts you outside of your comfort zone and they usually have nothing in common what so ever.

Inktober is coming again in ... well October. That'll be next week. I did it last year and it was fun. I might do it again this year but don't hold me to it because we all know how well 29 faces in September went. LOL

Female faces are my go-to and I don't feel like doing different expressions again this year. If I do decide to do it though, I'll probably practice animals in different positions or something. Birds in particular are my nemesis. People seem to like them but I'm not good at drawing them.

What's your go-to theme in drawing/painting/arting? What do you feel you could be better/improve at?

Sad face round robin

I started this Round Robin with the sad face, MissM added the body and Tandy finished it with the background.

This was my face at the beginning of the week when I realized all my daily videos for this year were gone. I mentioned before that I film my life every day, like little clips not 24 hours, and I put each day as a separate video. Somehow I managed to delete all 251 videos from this year.

Luckily I back it up on external drive every now and again, so I have everything backed up until 23rd August. I had videos from 10. September onward in a separate folder and they remained intact but 17 videos in between are lost forever.

I wasn't even mad, I was baffled. How could I have deleted them all?

Tabby kitty

My kid and I caught a cold or something. It seems to be effecting me more than him. It's straining to tend to a 2 year-old when your head hurts and your nose is leaking. At least it seams I'm over the fever for now. On the plus side, I lost my appetite and I'm not shoveling in the cookies.:)

Here's a kitty for you. Hope you're having a fantastic weekend.

Doggies RR

Round Robin is a set of 3 cards which one artist starts, send to another to add something to the set and then sends to the third artist to finish everything. Each artist keeps a card that's why there are 3 in a set.

This set was started with a butterfly by Linda4atc, BexMadeMe added the white dog and I finished it with the other butterfly and brown dog.

Ok, so, you know how I tell you things here on the blog, like, oh I'm eating healthy and losing weight, my kid is back to taking regular naps and I'm doing the 29 faces challenge? Yeah, well, the very next day, if not the same, I'm stuffing my face with junk food, my kid is taking 3 hours to fall asleep, if not skipping naps entirely, and there's no way I'm drawing a face a day this month. I failed.

Make me a character ...

This was a PAT, pick-a-theme swap of ATCs (artist trading cards) and everyone wanted a character of sorts. First one is an original character from the person requesting the theme, second one is a Two of Spades from Alice in Wonderland, third one is Myrtle Snow from American Horror Show and the last one is Winter Soldier - Marvel/DC character.

I've done these almost a month ago. The 29 faces challenge starts today but I'll show all the art from the week that starts today, in next week's blog post.

The only way the kid would go for a walk is, if we go feed old bread to the horses in nearby pasture. Whatever works, kid. :) I found it tires him out just right and he falls asleep quicker for his nap. It's been challenging for more than a week to get him to fall asleep. He took 2 to 3 hours. Luckily it's over now and he's back to normal. He gets like this now and again and I know I just have to wait it out.

Puppies

The first puppy might look simple and easy but the request was "Mini Dappled Dachshund Black, Tan, Silver Spots With stuffed badger toy in mouth".

Remember back in the days when we were kids? Whenever we wanted to play, we just went outside or to the neighbor’s to find kids to play with. These days everything that a kid finds entertaining is provided at home. Everyone has a swing and a slide in their backyard, everyone has a pool, everyone has the latest toy, a playset or whatever to play with and there’s no need to go to the neighbor’s anymore to have fun. And you can’t find a soul on the street to save your life.

My kid is in the stage of his growing up where he wants to play with older kids but also wants one of us to be with him. Us meaning mom, dad or grandma. But you can’t just show up at the doorstep with your child and ask to play with their kids. So, we resorted to a lot of phone calls asking the adults, if we can come over with our kid to play with their kids. It’s a bit awkward I must say. Once a week is fine. But every day? Kid, give me a break.

Mermaids

I'm sorry. I forgot to write today's blog post. Fridays come too quickly these days. :)

But I'd like you to know about this 29 faces challenge starting in September. I've done it before and loved it. Click below to read about it and join, if it interests you. I haven't yet decided, if I'll be posting every day, or do a summary on Fridays.

Pirates

Round Robin is a set of 3 cards which one artist starts, send to another to add something to the set and then sends to the third artist to finish everything. Each artist keeps a card that's why there are 3 in a set.

Linda4atc started this one with the pirate, LucyMc added the ship and I finished with the treasure chest and sand.

Randomness:
  • we had a hail storm on Sunday evening. Hail was the size of golf balls. Luckily we had our cars under roof and mom's vegetable garden has a net over it. But fruit trees and the vine took a beating.
  • the cooling down was welcomed though since we had a heat wave after heat wave going up to 40°C. We're lucky, too, that our house has great insulation and it holds a comfortable temp without having an A/C. Sometimes I have to go out to warm myself up. :)
  • my precious kid was a bit hyperactive the other day and threw my bag on the floor containing my kindle and camera. Needles to say the camera took the beating and the screen shattered. It's still working, I just can't see what I'm photographing.
  • we went to the beach for a day yesterday. Even though we didn't choose the best day since it was cloudy and rainy but it was still warm and the water was warm and the kid had a blast playing in the sand.

Just a Girl & Rumpelstiltskin

I haven't done one of these big haired ladies in a while. :)

A while ago I complained about one of the fairytales I was reading to my son for being depressive. Let me tell you about another one titled Rumpelstiltskin. I don't know what it is. Is it just because I'm an adult now and I see the story in a different light? Or have the times changed so much that the old stories don't really fit into our society anymore?

Here's the short version. It has a sketchy start. A poor man visits an evil king and brags about his daughter, saying she can spin straw into gold. Of course it's not true and the girl gets the short straw in this exchange. First off, wouldn't the poor man be rich, if his daughter could do that? Second, how did it not cross this poor man's mind that his daughter would now be in danger because of his claim?

The greedy king wants to test this girl so he has her brought to the castle in a room full of straw for her to spin into gold. He threatens her life, if she doesn't do so by the morning and the girl cries because she has no idea how to spin straw into gold. An imp appears and offers her his help for an exchange. She gives him her necklace. The next day she gives him her ring.

The third day the evil, greedy king promises to marry her, if she spins the straw into gold for the third time. Here's where I ask, why? Why would an evil king want to marry a poor girl when he can continue to threaten her life to get his gold? Here's another catch. After the third day, he doesn't ask her to spin the straw into gold anymore. Again why? Why would this greedy king decide after the third day that he has enough gold? It doesn't make sense. Why marry her and then not get any more gold?

Of course the imp wanted something in exchange the third day as well but the girl had nothing more to give, so he wanted her firstborn to which she agreed. First, who agrees to giving up their first born child? Second, girl, why don't you take off your shoes instead to make an exchange? You'll be a queen soon enough, you can spare them.

This story is not making any sense and the more I read it, the more it annoys me. But, it's my kid's favorite at the moment and I have to read it to him twice a day. He already knows some lines, that cheeky kid. :)

Dragons

Apparently everyone wants a dragon nowadays. :) I guess it's been so ever since the Game of Thrones started. I might be one of few that doesn't watch it. I mean, I don't watch TV as it is and ever since the kid was born, I haven't had the time to watch anything on computer either.

But I did give Game of Thrones a try awhile ago and it just threw me off with all the drama and killings and incest.

Fun fact: Our capitol city Ljubljana in which I was born and raised, has a green dragon as a city symbol.

Marie Antoinette

Randomness:
  • I had to pull my kid out from daycare because it was too traumatic for him (and the rest of us) to even leave home to go there. He'll stay home for another year and if I get a job in between, my mom will watch him.
  • I'm trying out a new "diet" or rather lifestyle to lose weight and I'm down 3 kg in a week. It's called Whole Starch Low Fat Plan Based. The good thing is that I'm not starving myself and then binging. I was actually surprised how easy it is to eat this way.
  • hubby is buying a new car and is dragging me with him to check them out and I'm not feeling it in this heat.
  • I have to cut new ATC blanks because I ran out. I buy a block of large and thick watercolor paper that I have to cut into 2.5"x 3.5". Not a small task.
  • Marie's I made for a swap at ATCsForAll swapping forum.

Fish round robin

Round Robin is a set of 3 cards which one artist starts, send to another to add something to the set and then sends to the third artist to finish everything. Each artist keeps a card that's why there are 3 in a set.

This set was started with a trout by Linda4atc, BexMadeMe added the rocks and I finished it with the rest.

Update: The kid keeps crying when I take him to daycare. He tells me he doesn't want to go and starts crying at home. I don't know what to do anymore. I feel like I'm traumatizing him with this. Should I find another daycare? Should I wait another year? Or should I persevere and let him cry? I mean, who would like to go to work, if someone dragged you crying from home and left you there? He stayed there half an hour twice, an hour once and an hour and a half the last time, so it's not like I disappear on him for half a day. Still I feel like I'm doing him a disservice.

A couple of kitties

I started introducing my kid to daycare this week. I talked to him a lot and goodbye was not a problem. But when I came to pick him up after just 30 minutes, he was sobbing. I mean hardcore crying with hiccups.

Apparently all was well until another kid pushed him and then waterworks began. He didn't even want to leave his spare clothes in daycare. We had to go get them and take them back home.

Today is another day and we'll see how it goes.

Oh, boy

Ok, so. I was a really easy child for my parents to have. They can attest to that, especially since they had a lot of trouble and heartache with my older brother. I was very unproblematic in a sense I didn't get in too much trouble and I didn't get into accidents.

I was thinking of myself as a little girl, of how I ever went to the doctor's because of illness. Ok, I had a lot of trouble with ear infections until I got surgery at age 3 or 4 but other than that I was fine. And I thought to myself it must be a gender thing, right?! Girls are the good ones and boys are the "wild" ones.

Because here I am on Monday morning at the doctor's because my kid decided to drink antifreeze from the garage. Yes, you read that right. Anti- freaking- freeze!!!! He's been told before not to drink anything from the bottles in the garage. We put them high up anyway but just in case someone forgets, like that morning when hubby was emptying out the car and left an opened bottle of antifreeze on the ground, he knows he's can't drink it. But he did it anyway. Because he could open the bottle easily and it was pink and he's a 2-year-old.

Seriously kid?! You broke your collarbone when you were not yet a year and a half old and now you're drinking antifreeze at not yet two and a half. I can't even imagine what awaits me yet. He's a courageous little boy. He's not reckless. He holds on so he wouldn't fall but he's not afraid of anything. And I have a feeling this trait of his is going to send us to ER many times more during his childhood.

He's fine. No damage was done. And I'm here thinking how lucky my parents were to have had such an unproblematic child as me.

Sea creatures and fairytales

I’m reading fairytales to my kid. They are well known like Puss in Boots and Little Mermaid (not the Disney one). Now, it’s either I never actually read them even though I know of them, or I actually forgot the storyline entirely. There’s a third possibility that the fairytales have been rewritten which happens a lot with different publishers but essentially the plot remains the same, it’s just the details that change and become more socially acceptable for this time. You know like in the Cinderella story where the stepsisters cut off their toes and hills to try to fit their feet in the glass slipper.

Ok, so I’m reading the Little Mermaid to my kid and it starts innocently enough with the mermaid falling in love with the prince she saved from drowning and wanting to go on shore to find him and live happily ever after. Well, the first twist is when she goes to the sea witch to get a potion to turn her fish tail to legs. Ok, it’s still acceptable for her to sacrifice herself because you expect something good to come out of it even though the little mermaid is going to be in pain the entire time she’s walking and the witch took her voice, so she can’t talk, which I admit is a bit excessive. But, the prince doesn’t know it’s the little mermaid who saved him and he fell in love with another girl who actually found him on the shore after the mermaid put him there.

The little mermaid is heartbroken and I was getting worried that this fairytale is getting a little depressed but I was like, no it has to have a happy ending, so I was still hoping the prince will find out the truth in the end. Except he doesn’t. He ends up marrying this girl who was incognito a princess from another kingdom.

What I didn’t tell you before is that for the mermaid to remain on the shore required a man she was in love with to love her and marry her and be faithful to her to the end. If that didn’t happen she would die because she couldn’t return to the sea. So yeah, the marriage was actually her death sentence. Here she is on this boat celebrating the prince’s wedding knowing she’ll be dead by the morning.

Here comes a second twist. Her sisters, she was the youngest of six daughters, bring her a knife from the sea witch with instructions for her to stab the prince in the heart and when the blood reaches her feet, they’ll turn back into fish tail and she could go back to the sea.

Hold up. What kind of message is that for the kids? Who wrote this fairytale? WTF? Who’s reading this fairytale to their kids? ... I am, obviously. Let me just quickly state here that my kid fell asleep before this part and I was happy about it.

Obviously she didn’t stab the prince because that would make her the villain, and she ended up becoming a daughter of the air because she was suffering but was still brave or whatever. And I’m like what kind of messed up ending is that? Where is the happy ever after? What kind of message is this fairytale trying to portray? Follow your heart, sacrifice yourself for love but instead of getting what you want you end up heartbroken and dead?

Now I’m thinking I might have blacked out the memory of this fairytale because it traumatized me so much. I think I’ll be reading these fairytales myself before I read them to my kid to see what they actually have to say. I must be very na├»ve to expect fairytales to be innocent and have a positive message.
